PM Karki instructs officials to act in line with youth aspirations

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called on top government officials to work with determination to end corruption, ensure good governance, and promote economic equality—reflecting the aspirations of the nation’s youth.

While addressing senior civil servants after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Sunday, Prime Minister Karki emphasized that she had not come to enjoy the privileges of power, but to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to her by the youth.

She reiterated her commitment to conducting elections and handing over power to a new parliament within six months.

“We are all aware of the circumstances under which this interim government was formed,” she said. “There has been a tragic loss of life and property. Crucial evidence and records from key institutions have been destroyed. Vehicles provided to security agencies were torched. Selective attacks were made on essential institutions. These acts must be investigated, and those responsible brought to justice.”

Prime Minister Karki expressed deep concern over the scale of the destruction, calling it unprecedented in Nepal’s history. “If Nepalis are behind this, we should be ashamed. This could very well be the result of a larger conspiracy,” she said.

She also underscored the importance of self-reliance in recovery efforts, stating that compensation and reconstruction should be carried out using internal resources.

“When I visited Maharajgunj yesterday, I was told that local businesspeople had pledged to rebuild the police station there. I thanked them. Let us move forward in this spirit of cooperation, not criticism. Help me in this effort.”

Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal acknowledged the daunting task ahead, noting that government offices and security institutions across the country had sustained severe damage. He stressed the urgency of allocating reconstruction funds and restoring essential services as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Karki assumed office today at the newly constructed Ministry of Home Affairs building in Singha Durbar. She was appointed to lead the interim government on September 10, following the violent Gen-Z protests that erupted on September 8 and 9, 2025.
