Nation’s most vital institutions targeted, I’m ashamed: PM

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has expressed deep concern over the recent attacks on the country’s key institutions during the Gen-Z movement, calling the destruction “shameful” and “unprecedented.”

Speaking after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Sunday, Prime Minister Karki said, “The country’s most essential institutions have been targeted. The police, who are responsible for ensuring public security, were attacked. Police posts and stations were burned down. Court files were destroyed. Critical documents that belonged to the nation are gone.”

She further questioned the intent behind such actions, stating, “Many of our Singha Durbars have been destroyed. It’s shocking—why were the very institutions that have upheld governance in Nepal deliberately targeted?”

The Prime Minister also voiced doubt and disappointment over the identity of those responsible. “I feel ashamed to witness this,” she said. “If this was done by a Nepali, can we even call them Nepali? People killing people, looting buildings—this may be the first time our country has seen something like this.”

Prime Minister Karki’s remarks come as the country begins to recover from the widespread violence and arson that erupted during recent protests.
