Lamichhane is being kept in a separate room with facilities: Rupandehi Prison

RUPANDEHI: The Rupandehi Prison Office has said that Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane has been kept in a separate cell from the outset due to security concerns.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the prison said Lamichhane, who has been in custody for the past four months over cooperative fraud and organized crime charges, has a dedicated cell with a private toilet.

The window, previously covered with plywood, now has a metal grill. He continues to have access to telephone and visitation facilities.

The prison administration stated that sick inmates are sent to local hospitals or transferred for further treatment upon a doctor’s recommendation. It emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and a human rights-friendly environment, urging media outlets to verify facts with official sources before publishing news about the facility.

Currently, 640 inmates are held in the prison, which has a capacity for 250. Despite overcrowding, authorities say they are providing all inmates with equal access to food, accommodation, movement space, education, television, and communication with relatives, in accordance with the Prison Act 2022. Additional facilities are offered to the disabled, elderly, and those at security risk, as allowed by law.
