KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Education Committee held a meeting on Wednesday under Mayor Balen Shah, with Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragai, educators, school representatives, and parent associations in attendance.
The committee approved several measures, including adding classes and subjects in both community and institutional schools, school name and location changes, ownership transfers, and revocation of permissions for non-operational schools.
Ranidevi Secondary School in Kathmandu-3, Ranibari, received permission to operate class 10 from the 2025 academic session.
Pashupati Mitra, Geetamata, Janakalyan, Janpath, and Nepal Adarsha Secondary Schools were allowed to add Civil and Computer Engineering subjects at the class 12 technical level.
Twenty-one schools were approved for name changes, while permission revocations for schools that exist only on paper or are not operational will follow on-site inspections. Alternative transfers were authorized for Mahila Jyoti, Jaina, and James Namuna schools. Standards for institutional school transfers will be prepared for the next committee meeting.
The committee also directed a report within 15 days to evaluate the 2025/26 education budget and the “Book Free Friday” program. A task force led by Dr. Surajraj Kafle will guide academic improvements in community schools, offering recommendations on operation standards, infrastructure, educational quality, and long-term planning.
The Education Department will also study and implement processes for recording and registering early childhood development programs.
