Nepal proposes minimum monthly salary of 1,000 dirhams for workers in UAE

KATHMANDU: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari has proposed revising the minimum monthly salary for Nepali migrant workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to at least 1,000 dirhams, during a meeting with UAE Ambassador to Nepal Abdulla Saeed Mubarak Jarwan Al Shamsi.

In the meeting held in Kathmandu, Minister Bhandari also highlighted the need for mandatory accommodation and food allowances amounting to an additional 400 dirhams per month, highlighting the importance of improving the living and working conditions of Nepali workers in the Gulf country.

Ambassador Al Shamsi welcomed the proposal positively and expressed his full support in facilitating its implementation.

The ambassador also inquired about the Nepal Government’s new pilot project to send women workers abroad as domestic helpers.

Minister Bhandari informed him that internal preparations have been completed, and the deployment process will begin once the House of Representatives Committee on Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare finalizes its decision.

In addition, Minister Bhandari shared updates on Nepal’s ongoing efforts to digitize all labor-related services, and expressed hope for continued cooperation from the UAE Government in this initiative.

Nepali workers represent a significant portion of the migrant workforce in the UAE, and bilateral discussions continue to focus on enhancing protections and benefits for them.
