Copper exploration begins in Tamankhola’s Narjakhani mine

BAGLUNG: Copper exploration has officially resumed in the Narjakhani area of Tamankhola Rural Municipality-6, decades after the historic mines were shut down.

Bikplus Minerals Pvt. Ltd. has begun preliminary studies after receiving a research permit from the Department of Mines and Geology, valid until September 30, 2027.

Copper deposits were actively mined in Tamankhola until 1925, but operations ceased when the government brought the mines under taxation. Locals say that remnants of tunnels and mining activity still exist in Bhitarban, Patlegaun, and other parts of the region.

Bikplus geologist Balram Karki said copper is visibly present on the surface and the area shows promising signs.

“We are currently conducting a geophysical survey – the first phase of our three-tiered research plan,” said Karki. “If successful, we’ll proceed to test drilling and then final drilling. If all stages show viable results, excavation can begin.”

Karki estimates that it would take between Rs. 20 to 22 billion in investment to fully operate the mine, adding that the team is assessing the feasibility of sourcing such investment.

Local officials and residents are hopeful. Chitra Chhantyal, chairperson of Ward No. 6, said that reopening mines once worked by their forefathers could help uplift the economic conditions of villagers. “We’ve waited years for this progress,” said Tamankhola Rural Municipality Chair Joklal Budhamagar. “The initial results of the study are positive.”
