Postponing general convention would be dumb: Shekhar Koirala

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has warned that any attempt to delay the party’s general convention under any pretext would be politically dangerous.

Issuing a statement on the occasion of the Nepali New Year 2082, Koirala urged party members to remain vigilant and committed to democratic principles.

Calling for a united effort to safeguard Nepal’s Constitution from growing right-wing influences, he emphasized the need for the Congress party to initiate timely reforms and reconnect with the public.

“If we place the country and the people above ourselves and our party, only then will Nepal find a way out of the current crisis,” he stated.

Reflecting on the current global tensions, which he described as a new Cold War, Koirala invoked the national reconciliation vision of BP Koirala, advocating for thoughtful and principled decision-making in both domestic and international affairs.

“We are at a historical crossroads. Even small missteps could push the country in the wrong direction,” he said.

Koirala also stressed that the solution to political anomalies must come from within the party itself. He called for a “Campaign for Clean Politics,” led by the Nepali Congress, to restore public trust.

He further stated that a purification movement is needed within the party to address issues like corruption, impunity, and institutional irregularities that have eroded the relationship between the public and political leadership.

Wishing all Nepalis happiness, peace, and prosperity in the New Year 2082, Koirala concluded his message with a call for responsible and reform-driven politics.
