Gen-Z movement must be investigated and those responsible punished: Oli

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has said that the Gen-Z movement should be investigated and those responsible for criminal activities during the protests must be punished.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the party’s 11th National General Convention at Sallaghari in Bhaktapur on Saturday, Oli said criminals involved in the movement should not be allowed to escape accountability.

Referring to the period following the Gen-Z movement, Oli recalled that constitutional options had been proposed to address the crisis. He stressed that constitutional amendments should be carried out through Parliament and reiterated the need for the reinstatement of the House of Representatives.

“As the caretaker prime minister, I showed a constitutional way forward, but the country was taken in the opposite direction,” Oli said. “The government was formed in a manner contrary to the constitution, and the House of Representatives was dissolved based on unconstitutional and unauthorized recommendations. Such dissolution is unconstitutional and wrong.”

He further said that sidelining elected representatives pushes citizens away from politics and weakens democracy.

“We do not accept the dissolution of the House. Our demand is the reinstatement of the House of Representatives and the country’s return to the path of democracy and the constitution,” Oli added.
