Election Commission allocates symbols to parties contesting PR race in House elections

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has allocated election symbols to political parties participating in the proportional representation (PR) system of the upcoming House of Representatives election, scheduled for March 5, 2026.

According to Assistant Election Officer Yagya Prasad Bhattarai, political parties submitted applications to take part in the PR election over a three-day period on December 7,9 and 9.

Although 100 parties applied to contest under the proportional system, applications from two or more parties opting to contest under a single common symbol reduced the total number of approved election symbols to 93, Bhattarai said.

The Commission said election symbols and serial numbers were determined based on the proportional votes received in the 2022 House elections. Parties without prior vote records were allotted symbols based on their registration order.

Accordingly, the sun has been assigned as the first election symbol, followed by the tree, five-pointed star, bell, plough, tilted umbrella, and loudspeaker in subsequent order.

Other approved election symbols include a plain basket with base, bicycle, madal, glass, walking stick, open single eye, deer, folded hands (namaste), rooster, water jug, glove imprint, well, doko, sickle and star, lotus flower, guitar, house, and sickle, among others.

The Commission also said the Nepal Federal Socialist Party, Bahujan Ekta Party Nepal, and Nepal Janajagruti Party have been allotted the bus as a common election symbol. Similarly, the Rastriya Mukti Party Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party, and Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal will contest using the millstone (janto) as a shared symbol.

The Election Commission said the allocation process was completed in line with existing laws and aimed at ensuring clarity and ease for voters during the proportional voting process.
