Bishwa Prakash: Congress will become irrelevant if it fails to grasp Gen-Z movement’s message

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has warned that the party will become increasingly irrelevant if it fails to understand the message of the Gen-Z movement.

In a written statement presented at Thursday’s Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa, Sharma said the Gen-Z movement is not an accidental outburst but the outcome of decades of frustration and inequality. “If Congress fails to grasp its essence, our very existence will come into question,” he said.

He noted that the movement reflects deep mistrust toward the country’s traditional political structure and mindset. “The people are not rejecting political parties; they are rejecting the prevailing culture of politics. We must move forward with new ideas, new conduct, and a new leadership ethic,” Sharma stated.

Sharma said Congress should support the interim government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. “This government is transitional. It must focus on peace, stability, and election preparation. Congress must play a responsible and constructive role in that direction,” he said.

He added that the opposition’s duty is not merely to criticize but to provide solutions and push the government toward stability. “To regain public trust, we must guide the government toward the right course,” Sharma emphasized.

Referring to the upcoming general election scheduled for March 5, Sharma called it an opportunity for renewal. “This is not just a contest for power but a moment to reshape our political culture. It’s a competition between old mindsets and a new generation,” he remarked.

He urged party leaders to accelerate election preparations, ensure transparency in candidate selection, and make political agendas more people-oriented. “This election will test the limits of public patience,” he said. “We must offer trust through our actions, not just promises.”

Sharma concluded by saying the Gen-Z movement has already warned of systemic change. “It’s now up to Congress to decide whether to take that warning as a chance for reform or as a threat. Our future depends on that choice,” he said.
