PM Karki expresses concern over sluggish spending, urges faster execution of government projects

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed concern that the expenditure rate of most government agencies remains unsatisfactory, calling for urgent action to speed up project implementation.

Addressing the first-trimester review meeting of fiscal year 2025/26 and the Ministerial Development Problem-Solving Committee on Thursday, PM Karki said the low spending trend has raised questions about the efficiency of public institutions.

She urged all heads of government bodies to fulfill their responsibilities with urgency and prioritize timely completion of planned programs within the remaining months of the fiscal year.

The Prime Minister stressed that government offices must deliver citizen-friendly services in line with the spirit of the Gen-Z movement, ensuring that public administration reflects accountability and responsiveness.

Karki acknowledged that the Gen-Z protests had disrupted several projects but insisted that government work “must continue with high morale and renewed commitment.”

She directed all agencies under the Prime Minister’s Office to meet their annual targets, finalize infrastructure damage assessments, and prepare a unified progress report.

PM Karki also emphasized upgrading the electronic procurement system and instructed the Ministry of Finance to facilitate coordination on pending budget issues.

Reaffirming her commitment to good governance, she said the government remains serious about removing Nepal from the FATF grey list and urged close coordination among regulatory and investigative agencies.

Karki reiterated that her administration is determined to build a corruption-free and transparent system, directing the National Vigilance Center to strengthen monitoring of public institutions.
