Election Commission to use national ID card biometrics for voter registration

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to use biometric data collected during the preparation of national identity cards (NIDs) for registering names in the voter list. The move aims to simplify voter registration and address increasing pressure as the November 16 deadline approaches.

The decision was made at a meeting between EC officials and the National Identity Card and Registration Department at Singha Durbar, following the initiative of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, said her Press Coordinator Ram Bahadur Rawal. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari confirmed that technical preparations and testing were underway, with implementation set to begin immediately.

The process allows citizens who already have NIDs to complete voter registration without visiting election offices in person, using their existing biometric details. Director General Namraj Ghimire stated that NID biometrics will be provided to the EC, and the commission will complete the remaining registration process.

This initiative responds to public complaints about server issues, long queues, and accessibility, ensuring smoother voter registration nationwide.
