Gold smuggling case: Lawsuit filed against Mahara seeking Rs 85.8 million in compensation



KATHMANDU: A case has been filed at the Kathmandu District Court against CPN (Maoist Centre) vice-chair Krishna Bahadur Mahara in connection with the gold smuggling case involving e-cigarettes (vapes) imported from Dubai.

The Kathmandu District Government Attorney’s Office registered the case on Monday, demanding compensation of around Rs 85.5 million (approximately 8 crore 55 lakh rupees).

Mahara was arrested on Sunday from his residence in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police. The case accuses him of involvement in the smuggling of about 9 kilograms of gold hidden inside electronic cigarettes brought by Chinese national Li Hansong.

According to the Attorney’s Office, supplementary charges have been filed against Mahara, and the detention hearing is set to begin on Tuesday.
