Netanyahu to skip Egypt summit; Palestinian President Abbas to attend

TEL AVIV: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not attend the summit in Egypt on Monday. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the decision via social media platform X.

According to the statement, “US President Donald Trump had invited Prime Minister Netanyahu to participate in the Egypt summit. The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for the invitation but stated he could not attend due to the upcoming holiday season.” Earlier, both the White House and the Egyptian President’s office had announced Netanyahu’s participation.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to attend the scheduled peace summit. The summit is co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and US President Donald Trump.

Over 20 world leaders are attending the meeting, which will discuss ending the Gaza conflict, strengthening long-term peace and stability in the Middle East, and post-war arrangements.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and European Council President Antonio Costa are also participating.

The summit is part of US President Donald Trump’s September 29 plan aimed at ending the Gaza war and establishing lasting peace in the Middle East.
