Minister Ghising requests for South Korean support in hydropower production

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Hydropower and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, has requested with the South Korean government for its support in the production of reservoir-based hydropower.

Nepal needs reservoir-based mega projects of over 500 MW for energy balance and export, for which South Korea can extend support, Minister Ghising said during a courtesy call the South Korean Ambassador to Nepal had on him on Monday.

Ambassador Park Taeyoung paid a courtesy call on Minister Ghising at the latter office. He congratulated the Minister and wished him a successful tenure.

Minister Ghising also reminded that Nepal and Korea have been enjoying smooth economic cooperation. He further shared that another area of assistance is the production of green hydrogen, which has a huge potential in Nepal. The green hydrogen could be used for production of fertilizer and operation of public transport.

Moreover, the Ambassador was requested to increase the quota for Nepali workers under EPS in Korea and help in creating entrepreneurship among the youths returned from Korean jobs.

The Minister informed the Korean Ambassador that the preparation was on for the breakthrough of the Upper Trishuli-1 (216MW) coming December, as it has recorded over 70 percent progress so far. The project is being constructed with the investment of a government company of Korea.

On the occasion, the envoy informed that discussion was underway with the Finance Ministry to support Nepal in construction of transmission line.
