Nepal Student Union calls for NC general convention before upcoming elections

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, has demanded that the party hold its general convention before the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5.

At a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, NSU leaders said the party must undergo internal reforms and revitalization through a timely convention to restore public trust and strengthen its democratic foundation.

NSU President Dujang Sherpa said the party should purify itself by organizing the general convention ahead of the polls, reflecting the aspirations of younger members. “The party must move forward by understanding the sentiments of youth and by freeing itself from corruption and irregularities,” Sherpa said. He also urged the leadership to introduce a policy requiring all party members holding positions at various levels to publicly disclose their updated property details every year.

Sherpa further said the NSU would turn the Gen Z movement’s anti-corruption and accountability campaigns into an institutional initiative within the party.

Commenting on recent protests, Sherpa said that if former prime ministers or home ministers are found guilty in ongoing investigations related to the Gen Z movement, they should face legal action. He also called for an impartial probe into Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah’s conduct during the same period.

Sherpa alleged that attacks on Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, during the protests were premeditated and demanded that those involved be brought to justice.

The NSU also urged the government to take concrete measures to strengthen the morale of the country’s security agencies, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining peace, security, and political stability.
