Rabi Lamichhane to return to jail

KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, who had temporarily left jail during the Gen-Z protests while in custody over a cooperative fraud case, is set to return to prison.

On Tuesday, protesters involved in the Gen-Z movement, including some party leaders, surrounded Nakkhu Jail, providing Lamichhane an opportunity to step out. Following his brief absence, nearly 15,000 inmates escaped from 26 prisons and reform homes across the country, and several facilities were vandalized.

After heavy public criticism and instructions from Nakkhu Jail administration to make immediate contact, Lamichhane has announced he will return to prison.

Birthday behind bars

Coincidentally, Lamichhane’s birthday falls on Saturday, and he said he will mark it by returning to jail. “By coincidence, today is my birthday. I am sending myself back to jail as a birthday gift,” he stated in a Facebook video.

He also expressed hope that under the leadership of newly appointed interim Prime Minister and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, he will not face further injustice. “Now that the personification of justice herself is leading the country, I hope I will not face any further injustice,” Lamichhane said.

Earlier, he claimed he had left jail based on a secretary-level decision, but the jail administration clarified that due to the chaotic situation, he was required to complete formal paperwork before leaving.
