UML’s Yogesh Bhattarai calls for party reform

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai has called for comprehensive reforms within the party to strengthen its connection with the people and demanded a thorough investigation into the events of September 8 and 9 with strict action against those responsible.

In a video message posted on social media, Bhattarai expressed concern that Nepal has once again entered a transitional crisis, stating that the dissolution of Parliament was not the correct way to address the situation. He stressed that the political transition should have followed constitutional procedures.

“The demands of the Gen-Z movement could have been addressed through Parliament. The person appointed as Prime Minister could also have been made Prime Minister via parliamentary procedure. But that path was not taken. Parliament has been dissolved. This is not the right solution,” Bhattarai said in the 12-minute 20-second video.

He warned that disregarding constitutional processes risks undermining the Constitution itself, making the enactment of a new constitution in the future far more difficult. “There is no alternative but to patiently restore the Constitution and democratic processes. We urge the Prime Minister and President to ensure that every action they take is constitutional; we will support that,” he added.

Bhattarai also criticized corruption, misgovernance, and societal injustices, highlighting that although the UML has achieved significant success in physical infrastructure, it has not done enough to curb corruption. He condemned party members leaving during crises and appealed for them to return to the UML, emphasizing that societal and individual transformation is urgently needed.
