KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association has strongly objected to President Ram Chandra Paudel’s move to dissolve Parliament, calling it unconstitutional and authoritarian.
The dissolution came late Friday night on the recommendation of newly appointed interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. In a statement issued soon after, the Bar condemned the decision as a violation of constitutional supremacy, the rule of law, and constitutionalism.
According to the Bar, the president’s action undermines the long and difficult struggle of the Nepali people for democracy, and is aimed at reversing key democratic achievements, including republicanism, inclusiveness, and federalism.
The statement further noted that dissolving the House of Representatives goes against past Supreme Court rulings that reinstated Parliament, and declared that no pretext can justify such a regressive step.
The Bar demanded the immediate restoration of democracy and strict adherence to constitutional supremacy. It also urged all stakeholders to respect the aspirations enshrined in the constitution and remain vigilant against any move that could destabilize the hard-earned democratic gains.
