Flood alert issued for 55 districts as rivers swell



KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued an alert for areas at risk of flooding today (Wednesday, August 13).

According to the Division, water levels in the Koshi tributaries, as well as the Mahakali and Babai rivers, are close to the alert threshold. Flows in the Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali, Kankai, Kamala, East Rapti, and West Rapti rivers remain below the alert level but are expected to rise.

The Division has also warned of a significant increase in the flow of small rivers in Ilam, Jhapa, Panchthar, Solukhumbu, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Gorkha, Lamjung, Kalikot, Bajura, Bajhang, Darchula, Baitadi, Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and surrounding districts, with a high likelihood of moderate flash flood risk.

Similarly, rivers in Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Taplejung, Sunsari, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchok, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Tanahun, Kaski, Parbat, Syangja, Chitwan, Nawalparasi-East, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Dolpa, Palpa, Gulmi, Baglung, Myagdi, and nearby districts are also expected to swell significantly, posing a moderate risk of flash floods.

The Division has reported that the monsoon remains active, forecasting widespread rainfall for the next 24 hours. A total of 55 districts have been placed under a yellow alert, with residents in flood-prone areas advised to remain vigilant.
