Protecting achievements is today’s necessity: General Secretary Pokharel

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said that safeguarding the rights and achievements earned through long political struggles is the key responsibility of today’s Nepali society.

Speaking at an event held in Bhaktapur on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the National Human Rights and Social Justice Forum Nepal (Human Rights Alliance), Pokharel emphasized that the political parties of Nepal made significant sacrifices to secure the rights people enjoy today.

He recalled that although some rights were granted to the people after the political change of 2007 BS, they were later stripped away by the monarchy.

Pokharel argued that a strong democratic state is essential for the protection of human rights. He dismissed the notion that the state itself is anti-human rights, saying such views only promote social anarchy.

Pokharel warned that social chaos ultimately weakens the state and obstructs national development. He reiterated that a democratic system serves as a defender—not a violator—of human rights.

Criticizing those who exploit public frustration for political gain, he said such forces mislead society, increase disorder, and push the country backward.

Addressing current economic challenges, Pokharel expressed concern over the continued outflow of working-age citizens.

“How can we build a nation if all working people go abroad? They leave, then complain about the lack of progress. We must stay here and contribute,” he said. He added that prosperity is only possible if citizens actively participate in nation-building.
