Maoist Centre tells Parliament: We reopened the House trusting government will investigate corruption

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has stated that it decided to reopen Parliament based on the government’s assurance that it would investigate the recent visa-related corruption scandal and other similar issues.

Speaking during Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Chief Whip Hit Raj Pandey said the party had initially disrupted the House for two weeks in protest but resumed participation after receiving a commitment from the government.

“We obstructed the House for two weeks over the visit visa scandal and related corruption,” Pandey said. “But through continued dialogue, we have gained confidence that the government will carry out an investigation. With this belief, we’ve decided to resume Parliament to raise pressing public concerns.”

His remarks came amid continued protest from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), whose members banged on their desks and stood in opposition while he spoke.

The Maoist Centre had earlier reached a two-point agreement with the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to end the standoff. However, the deal did not include demands for Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak’s resignation or the formation of a parliamentary investigation committee, which had been key opposition demands.
