Woman dies under suspicious circumstances in Rautahat, family alleges dowry-related murder

RAUTAHAT: A 21-year-old woman has died under suspicious circumstances less than six months after her marriage in Katahariya Municipality, Rautahat. Her family has alleged that she was murdered over dowry and has demanded a thorough investigation and legal action against those responsible.

The deceased, Saniya Prabin, was the wife of Armaan Rai Bhat, a resident of Katahariya Ward No. 5. Originally from Baderwa Tole in Katahariya Ward No. 3, Saniya was reportedly found hanging in her room on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Following the incident, a joint team from the Area Police Offices in Katahariya and Garuda reached the scene, prepared an initial report, and sent Saniya’s body to the Provincial Hospital in Gaur for postmortem. Police confirmed that the postmortem was conducted in the presence of her mother, Kayama Khatun.

Kayama said that her daughter had married Armaan about six months ago in accordance with Muslim customs. She claimed that soon after the wedding, Saniya had been subjected to repeated physical and mental abuse over dowry demands.

According to her, Saniya’s in-laws had orchestrated the murder and made it appear to be a suicide. The family has filed a complaint with the Area Police Office in Garuda, demanding the immediate arrest of Armaan and other family members involved.

However, DSP Rajan Karki, Chief of the Area Police Office in Garuda, stated that no formal complaint has been registered so far.

“The incident appears suspicious. We will be able to say more after completing our investigation. Legal proceedings will be taken forward accordingly,” he said.
