BP Highway obstructed after flood washes away diversion

KATHMANDU: The BP Highway has been obstructed after a flood washed away a temporary diversion at Roshi Khola in Mapti, Kavre, following continuous rainfall.

According to the District Police Office, Kavre, efforts have been ongoing since last night to clear the highway.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Min Bahadur Ghale, the office’s information officer, stated that the flood severely damaged the section of the road leading to Mangaltar in Roshi Rural Municipality-12, making it impossible to reopen the highway overnight.

Ghale added that the police, in coordination with local residents, have been working since this morning to open at least one lane of the highway to resume traffic.

The diversion that was swept away had been temporarily constructed after a previous flood damaged the same area in September last year. Police also rescued 17 passengers who were stranded due to the road blockage.

Meanwhile, search efforts are underway for a woman who went missing in a flood on Monday afternoon following heavy rainfall.

Renuka Giri, 33, a resident of Subbagaun in Panauti Municipality-5, was swept away by the Dhalamle River at around 6:00 pm while returning from a local fair.

Police reported that the search was called off late Monday night after she could not be located. Pranau Ghale said a joint team comprising personnel from Nepal Police, the Nepal Army, and the Armed Police Force resumed the search operation early Tuesday morning.

Several areas around Panauti Bus Park were inundated by Monday’s rain. Local farmers have reported that the floodwaters also damaged fields planted with potatoes.
