KATHMANDU: In the past year, a total of 745 people lost their lives in disaster-related incidents across the country, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The Authority reported that 8,861 disasters occurred over the year, resulting not only in fatalities but also in significant human and economic impact.
Spokesperson Ram Bahadur KC stated that 69 people went missing and 1,702 were injured in these events. In total, 18,991 households were affected, and the estimated economic loss amounted to Rs 3.13 billion.
The highest number of deaths occurred due to landslides, which claimed 351 lives.
This was followed by floods, which caused 97 deaths, lightning strikes with 78 fatalities, and fires that led to 77 deaths. Animal attacks accounted for 43 deaths, while 24 people drowned, 23 died in air crashes, and 19 lost their lives due to snake bites.
Additionally, eight people died due to heavy rainfall, ten from separate fire incidents, seven from storms, one from a boat capsizing, and seven others from various causes.
Avalanches also contributed to the toll, with 48 deaths, 18 flood-related fatalities, and three people still missing.
While landslides were the deadliest, fire incidents were the most frequent. From April 1 to April 29, 2025, there were 4,145 reported cases of fire.
Following that, there were 1,195 cases of animal attacks and 1,105 incidents of landslides.
Floods and heavy rains were also prevalent, each recorded at 418 and 568 incidents respectively, along with 418 lightning strikes and 111 drowning cases. Other disasters included two air crashes, 84 snake bite incidents, 349 windstorms, one boat capsizing, six avalanches, 74 earthquakes, one hailstorm, and seven other miscellaneous disaster events.
