Janamat and Nagarik Unmukti in merger talks, stalled by internal differences

KATHMANDU: Discussions on a possible merger between the Madhesh-centric Nagarik Unmukti Party and Janamat Party are underway.

However, internal disagreements within Nagarik Unmukti Party, particularly between party patron Resham Chaudhary and party chair Ranjita Shrestha, have delayed the process.

While the Janamat Party, led by Dr. CK Raut, has already formed a three-member task force to facilitate the merger, Naupa has yet to make a formal decision.

The task force, comprising Abdul Khan, Sharad Singh Yadav, and Bal Gobinda Chaudhary, was established following a central committee meeting on March 10.

Janamat Party spokesperson Yadav stated that they are waiting for Nagarik Unmukti Party’s decision, as Resham Chaudhary is engaged in discussions with them, and Ranjita Shrestha is also aware of the matter.

Meanwhile, Nagarik Unmukti Party lawmakers say the party is yet to hold a central committee meeting to finalize its stance.

“We have not been able to make any formal decision regarding the party merger yet. The party’s central committee meeting is scheduled within the month of Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April),” said MP Gangaram Chaudhary. “Only after the central committee members express their views will a decision be made based on the majority. At this moment, nothing can be said for certain.”

Differences within Nagarik Unmukti Party are evident, with Resham Chaudhary supporting the merger while Ranjita Shrestha remains unconvinced.

This disagreement between the husband-wife duo has reportedly complicated the party’s internal dynamics. Neither has publicly commented on the issue.
