CIAA files case against Department of Water Resources engineer over illicit wealth

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case at the Special Court against Bishnukumar Shrestha, a former engineer at the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation, on charges of amassing disproportionate assets.

According to the CIAA, Shrestha’s earnings since entering public service on July 14, 1989, were calculated, revealing a legal income of Rs 112.565 million up to July 15, 2020.

However, the investigation found that his total expenditure and investments amounted to Rs 161.395 million, leaving Rs 48.83 million unaccounted for.

The commission concluded that Shrestha had acquired this wealth illegally by abusing his official position.

Spokesperson Narahari Ghimire stated that the case also involves Shrestha’s wife, Laxmi Kumari Shrestha; father, Hari Kumar Shrestha; mother, Indra Kumari Shrestha; and son, Bivek Shrestha.

These family members are alleged to have benefited from the unlawfully acquired assets, as properties and investments were found in their names.

The CIAA has requested the confiscation and recovery of the illicitly acquired assets, along with a fine of Rs 48.83 million.
