UML’s Karna Thapa expresses concern over Bhim Rawal joining Nepali Communist Party

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Standing Committee member Karna Bahadur Thapa has expressed serious concern following former Vice-Chair Dr. Bhim Rawal’s decision to join the newly formed Nepali Communist Party.

Writing on social media on Wednesday, Thapa lamented that the first-generation leaders of the UML in Sudurpaschim are no longer with the party.

He remarked that as the senior generation departs, a significant portion of the younger generation has also failed to remain engaged with the party. “Instead, there seems to be a mysterious effort within a certain circle to push out those who are still active,” Thapa wrote.

Expressing pain over the departure of his long-time comrades, Thapa said it was disheartening to see leaders who had struggled together for decades leaving the party. While acknowledging that internal differences and debates are natural, he said deliberately making colleagues feel unwelcome within the party is unacceptable.

“If any of my comrades who have left the party hold grievances against me, I sincerely apologize,” Thapa said, adding that as a senior leader from Sudurpaschim, he feels responsible for fostering unity.

He urged leaders who contributed during difficult times to come together in easier times to help resolve the nation’s crises.

Thapa also warned that a self-destructive mentality within UML was deepening internal divisions. “The tendency to see one’s future in another’s downfall will turn everyone to ashes,” he cautioned.

Recalling his early political struggles, Thapa wrote, “I entered politics at the tender age of 16 or 17. I have seen and experienced this country through many phases, but never before have I witnessed such a destructive battle of ego and prestige.”

In recent months, Thapa himself has voiced differing opinions within UML, echoing Rawal’s critical stance toward party chair KP Sharma Oli. Nonetheless, he called on all UML leaders, cadres, and supporters to stand firm on the ground of reality and remain active within the party.
