NC’s Gagan Thapa calls for party restructuring and self-review

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has urged a thorough restructuring of the party, emphasizing the need for introspection following a perceived loss of public trust, particularly among younger voters.

In a video message released Friday, Thapa said that winning elections and earning the people’s confidence are two different matters.

“We must examine why citizens’ trust in us has eroded. Especially, the new generation seems dissatisfied with our leadership,” he said. “It is not enough to just find answers — we must also take action.” He added that the party has struggled to move in a coordinated and effective manner.

Acknowledging damage to the party’s image, Thapa stated, “We cannot simply clean the mirror; we must take responsibility. The Nepali Congress must apologize to the nation and heal these wounds.”

Thapa also called for a full investigation into the inhumane and brutal incidents of September 8 and 9, during which both party leaders and workers were attacked. “We must recognize legitimate public anger, but deliberate acts of violence are punishable. Those responsible must be brought under the law,” he said.

The NC leader said the party must take the lead in the country’s reconstruction and political stabilization. Thapa added that the Congress is actively engaged in dialogue with the President, other parties, and the Gen Z movement regarding government formation. He said the party is working to ensure that the candidate preferred by Gen Z becomes prime minister and that the new government remains fully aligned with the constitution.

Expressing optimism, Thapa said he believes a new government will be formed by Friday evening.
