India approves additional 200 MW electricity import from Nepal

KATHMANDU: India has approved Nepal’s request to export an additional 200 megawatts of electricity, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) announced.

This approval covers power generated from five hydropower projects.

Previously, India had permitted the import of 810.9 MW from Nepal, bringing the total export capacity to 1,011 MW.

Nepal also exports 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh, making the total export approval 1,050.9 MW.

The approval for the additional 200 MW is valid until October 31, the authority said.

The exported electricity will come from the Likhu-2, Likhu Khola A, Lower Solu, Thulo Khola, Super Kabeli Khola A, and Super Kabeli Khola projects.

In the fiscal year 2024/25, Nepal earned Rs 17.47 billion from electricity exports to India.

With the new export approval, the Nepal Electricity Authority expects electricity exports to double in the current fiscal year.
