HETAUDA: The newly appointed Chief Minister of Bagmati Province, Indra Bahadur Baniya, is seeking a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly today.
Ram Kumar Poudel, Secretary of the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, said that Chief Minister Baniya is expected to submit the motion during the Assembly meeting scheduled for 4:00 p.m. today.
Baniya, who also serves as President of the Nepali Congress Bagmati Province, was appointed Chief Minister on August 5 with the support of 64 members from the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.
A week after his appointment, he is now moving to secure the Assembly’s confidence. He had formally requested the Secretariat to convene the Assembly meeting for this purpose.
As per constitutional provisions, a newly appointed Chief Minister must obtain a vote of confidence within 30 days. Baniya is presenting the motion in accordance with Article 168(4) of the Constitution of Nepal and Rule 143(1) of the Provincial Assembly Rules, 2074 BS.
Meanwhile, the ruling coalition partners—the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—have issued a whip to ensure their lawmakers vote in favor of Chief Minister Baniya.
Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Member Secretary Min Krishna Maharjan and UML Chief Whip Ekalal Shrestha jointly issued the directive, making attendance and support in today’s vote mandatory for their members.
