KANCHANPUR: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents living along the lower coastal areas of the Mahakali River to remain alert as the river’s water level is expected to rise significantly.
The warning comes after India’s Dhauliganga Hydropower Project announced that it will open the gates of its dam from midnight on Friday until 12 noon on Saturday.
The Department has issued a public notice, cautioning that this release of water could lead to a rise in the Mahakali River’s water level, potentially affecting nearby settlements. Residents are advised to stay vigilant until Sunday morning.
In a separate notice, Dhauliganga Power Station under NHPC confirmed the planned release of water, stating that the dam had to be opened urgently to flush out sediment due to excess accumulation in the reservoir caused by heavy inflow.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have requested locals to exercise caution during this period.
