Judge who acquitted Aftab Alam smeared with black soot

KATHMANDU: Judge Dr. Khushiram Tharu of the High Court, Birgunj, was smeared with black soot by individuals believed to be affiliated with the Nepal Communist Party (Majority).

The attackers approached the judge while he was on the bench smeared his face with black soot—a symbolic act often used in Nepal as well as in South Asia to publicly humiliate individuals. Police quickly intervened and arrested two of the assailants.

The attack took place just days after a bench led by Judge Tharu acquitted former Nepali Congress MP Aftab Alam, who had been imprisoned in connection with a high-profile murder case.
