KATHMANDU: With recent changes in weather conditions, temperatures across parts of Nepal have started to gradually decrease due to localized rainfall.
According to the Weather Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, increased rainfall in eastern Nepal over the past two days has led to a noticeable dip in temperatures in that region.
While other areas of the country are still experiencing heat, temperatures there are also expected to decline gradually.
Meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane said that temperatures have decreased in the eastern region, while the western region remains warmer, though a gradual cooling trend is expected. “It is still hotter in the west compared to the east,” he noted.
In the past few hours, rainfall has been recorded in Kathmandu Valley, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Khotang, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Dolakha, Kavre, Nuwakot, Gorkha, and Makawanpur.
This pattern is likely to continue on Thursday and Friday, bringing further temperature drops on those days, Lamichhane said.
While there is no widespread or uniform rainfall system across the country, daytime heat is still expected, particularly in the afternoons, the division stated.
The Division stated, “In the past three hours, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning occurred in some parts of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces, with isolated instances of heavy rainfall.”
As the rain-producing system moves southwest, there is a possibility of further showers with thunder in the surrounding areas, it said.
Light rain has also been recorded in parts of Gandaki and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and the chances of rainfall remain high in other areas as cloud cover continues to build.
Meteorologist Lamichhane said the Division is closely monitoring the monsoon, which so far remains concentrated in the eastern region. “Conditions are becoming more favorable for the monsoon to advance, and we expect more definitive updates in the coming days. An official bulletin will be issued once all criteria are met,” he said.
The average date for monsoon onset in Nepal is June 13. However, this year the monsoon entered eastern Nepal around 15 days earlier than usual, only to recede temporarily back toward East Asia, according to meteorological officials.
