PM Karki reviews progress on recovering misappropriated Tribhuvan University land

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Tuesday reviewed the progress of recovering Tribhuvan University’s misappropriated land and the steps being taken to restore it.

The Prime Minister held the meeting at Singha Durbar with Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Education Minister Mahabir Pun, and Communications Minister Jagdish Kharel.

TU officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deepak Aryal, Rector Prof. Khadga KC, and Registrar Prof. Kedar Prasad Rijal, were also present. Chief Secretary Ekanarayan Aryal and members of the Land Investigation Committee attended the discussion.

PM Karki sought updates on the implementation of the report, asking specifically how much land has been recovered, the ongoing recovery process, and actions taken against those responsible.

TU officials requested government support to evict those occupying the university land illegally and to restore the value of misappropriated properties. Home Minister Aryal noted that the university must take the lead in the recovery process and file separate cases with agencies such as the CIB for each instance of illegal occupation. He added that CIB expertise could facilitate prompt action.

Chief Secretary Aryal said about 60% of the tasks highlighted in the report could be carried out by the university itself, and that the government’s direct intervention is not required for all activities. Education Minister Pun suggested forming a task force comprising all relevant stakeholders to expedite immediate actions.

PM Karki directed that unauthorized individuals and institutions must be stopped from occupying, forcibly encroaching on, or selling TU land. She also ordered that anyone found guilty in these cases must be held accountable without delay.
