KATHMANDU: A writ has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of Saroj Kumar Yadav as Chief Minister of Madhes Province.
The petition follows Yadav’s swearing-in on Friday at Panas Hotel in Bardibas, Mahottari, by Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari. Seven political parties have jointly filed the writ, citing concerns over the legitimacy of the appointment.
Yadav has stated that his appointment was in accordance with Nepal’s Constitution and prevailing laws. Subedi Bhandari had appointed him under Article 168(3) of the Constitution, noting that Yadav’s party is the largest in the province with the most provincial assembly members.
However, Bhandari was removed from office by the federal government on Monday. Following Yadav’s appointment, opposition parties and their supporters protested inside the provincial assembly building, setting tires on fire and causing property damage.
The writ has been filed by 74 provincial assembly members demanding the cancellation of Yadav’s appointment. The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing for Wednesday.
