Kulman Ghising and Sudan Gurung hold final talks ahead of separate party registrations

KATHMANDU: Energy Minister Kulman Ghising and Gen-Z movement leader Sudan Gurung are holding another round of discussions as they work to finalize their respective political parties.

The two leaders have met repeatedly since Sunday to explore the possibility of forming a joint party. Meetings were also held on Monday and Tuesday mornings. During Tuesday’s discussion, Ghising insisted that his party retain the name “Ujyalo Nepal” and proposed former secretary Anup Kumar Upadhyay as the party leader.

Gurung, on the other hand, emphasized that the party should reflect the Gen-Z movement and the involvement of his family, advocating for leadership to be assigned accordingly. As the two sides failed to reach an agreement in the morning session, Gurung temporarily left the meeting.

Sources indicate that Ghising has called Gurung for a final discussion before the party registrations. “From the beginning, we have stressed that the party leadership should reflect the Gen-Z movement. Ghising has not accepted this. We are meeting again today,” said one of Gurung’s associates.

If no agreement is reached, it is likely that Ghising will proceed with registering “Ujyalo Nepal” while Gurung will register a separate party representing the families associated with the movement. Gurung’s planned party is expected to include Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and former lawmaker Sumana Shrestha, though Shah is reportedly working behind the scenes.
