GenZ Movement demands dismissal of Energy Minister and NEA MD over alleged illegal power deal

KATHMANDU: The GenZ Movement Nepal has demanded the immediate dismissal of Energy Minister Kulman Ghising and Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Manoj Silwal, accusing them of involvement in an illegal electricity purchase agreement.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the movement alleged that the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation and the NEA signed an unlawful agreement worth around Rs 430 million with India’s PTC India Ltd.

Calling the deal anti-national and corruption-ridden, the group urged the government to take legal action against those involved.

The movement put forward four demands:

  1. Immediate dismissal of Minister Ghising and filing of a case at the CIAA,
  2. Suspension of NEA MD Silwal and initiation of an investigation under the Anti-Money Laundering Act,
  3. Formation of an independent probe committee by the Electricity Regulatory Commission and public disclosure of all power agreements, and
  4. Legal action and imprisonment of those involved in the “anti-national” deal, along with recovery of misused state property.
