Youth stage sit-in at Congress headquarters demanding youth-friendly reforms in the party

KATHMANDU: Youth members affiliated with the Nepali Congress staged a sit-in at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Saturday, demanding mandatory 40 percent representation of youth in all party departments.

The demonstrators called for an amendment to the party statute to ensure at least 40 percent youth representation within all organizational departments.

They also demanded that the statute mandate a provision requiring at least 40 percent of official candidates in all levels of elections to be youths.

The group further emphasized that the distribution of active memberships should be expedited to ensure that at least 25 percent of the party’s active members fall within the Gen-Z age group. They also urged an end to the provision allowing outgoing presidents, office bearers, and members of committees to automatically become general convention representatives. Such a change, they said, would help build a dynamic and accountable Congress.

Nepal Student Union (NSU) central member Akash Upreti said the protesters also demanded that the party establish clear criteria for active membership distribution, make the process open and technology-friendly, and allow applications at any time.

They further called for a statutory provision separating party leadership from government positions, stating that no individual should hold dual responsibilities simultaneously.
