KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has revoked the use of blue number plates for vehicles used by Honorary Consuls General and Consuls appointed by foreign countries.
The decision was made by the Cabinet and announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, the move was taken in line with international laws governing honorary consuls, the principle of reciprocity, and the Regulations on Honorary Consuls, 2039.
The blue number plates, which previously identified vehicles used by Honorary Consuls, were reportedly being misused, prompting the government to act.
The vehicles currently bearing blue number plates will now be re-registered as private vehicles, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate with relevant authorities for the implementation of this decision.
However, the provision allowing Honorary Consuls to use the national flag of their appointing country during official events—such as Nepal’s National Day, the National Day of the appointing country, official meetings, receptions, farewells, and visits by their Head of State, Head of Government, Foreign Minister, or Ambassador—will remain unchanged.
