Top Bahadur Rayamajhi expresses willingness to return to prison

KATHMANDU: Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who was incarcerated in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee case and is currently out of prison, has said he is prepared to return to custody.

According to sources within the prison administration, Rayamajhi contacted officials by phone and expressed his willingness to return to any designated prison. However, the administration reportedly advised him not to return at this time.

“We told him to stay in contact. He will be informed once the situation is under control,” a prison official stated.

Rayamajhi had been held at the Central Prison in Sundhara, which was severely affected during the recent unrest. Out of approximately 3,800 inmates, around 3,300 managed to escape, including high-profile detainees such as Chudamani Upreti alias “Gore,” the main accused in the gold smuggling scandal.

Some escapees have already returned voluntarily, while others are reportedly in the process of returning. The prison administration has also confirmed that former secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, another accused in the refugee scam, has conveyed his readiness to return.

According to security sources, the mass jailbreak occurred around 10 p.m. on Tuesday when prisoners who had been released from Nakkhu Prison attacked the Sundhara facility. Police personnel stationed for security reportedly withdrew and retreated toward Army Headquarters.

The Nepali Army eventually intervened, but by the time they arrived, approximately 3,300 prisoners had already escaped.
