Over 25,000 households in Chitwan at risk of floods and landslides



CHITWAN: More than 25,733 households in Chitwan district are at high risk of floods and landslides triggered by ongoing monsoon rains, according to the District Disaster Management Committee.

Preliminary estimates suggest that approximately 128,665 people across seven local levels could be affected by the severe weather conditions.

Among the affected areas, Rapti Municipality is projected to be the hardest hit, with around 10,109 households and 50,950 residents at risk.

Bharatpur Metropolitan City follows with 6,635 households and an estimated 33,175 people potentially affected. In Madi Municipality, 3,946 households representing 19,730 individuals are vulnerable, while Ratnanagar Municipality is expected to see impacts on 2,381 households comprising 11,905 people.

Further projections show that 1,005 households in Kalika Municipality, or about 5,025 people, could face flood threats. Khairahani Municipality has 320 at-risk households with 1,600 individuals, and in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality, 1,256 households comprising 6,280 people have been identified as being in danger.

Chief District Officer Prakash Paudel stated that all necessary precautions are being taken to minimize risks and ensure preparedness. He said that residents living along riverbanks have been asked to remain alert and take preventive measures.

Rescue teams and emergency infrastructure have been placed on standby, and local authorities have been directed to keep essential supplies, including food, medicine, and rescue equipment, ready for immediate deployment.

With monsoon rains expected to continue, district officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local governments to carry out early warnings, evacuations, and relief distribution if needed.
