Flood in Rasuwa halts 250 MW of hydropower production

RASUWA: Heavy flooding in Lhende Khola, near the Nepal-China border, has forced the shutdown of hydropower plants in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, cutting off around 250 megawatts of electricity production under the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

According to officials, the flood has caused significant damage to multiple hydropower projects, including the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, Trishuli 3A, Chilime Hydropower, and Beni Hydropower.

The most severe damage was reported at the 111-megawatt Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project. Floodwaters entered the plant through the water tunnel, submerging the powerhouse and damaging key infrastructure including the headbox, according to station head Santosh Adhikari.

The other affected projects include Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project (60 MW), Chilime Hydropower Project (21 MW) and Beni Hydropower Project (19 MW).

The sudden halt in power generation has raised concerns over potential electricity supply disruptions, especially during the ongoing monsoon season. Restoration work is expected to begin once the floodwaters recede and safety assessments are completed.
