Govt urged to rescue 469 Nepalis held hostage in Saudi Arabia

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have called on the government to take immediate action to rescue hundreds of Nepali workers reportedly held hostage in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

During an emergency session of the House of Representatives on Sunday, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) MP Gyanendra Shahi raised the alarm, demanding urgent intervention for the rescue of 469 Nepalis. He criticized the continued exploitation of Nepali migrant workers and urged the government to act swiftly.

Echoing similar concerns, Nepali Congress MP Rama Koirala Paudel highlighted the need for systemic reform in the labor sector. She proposed the formation of a tripartite labor commission comprising representatives from the government, employers, and workers to address the persistent issues in foreign employment.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security have acknowledged the matter and expressed commitment to looking into the situation.
