SC hears habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Rabi Lamichhane

KATHMANDU: The habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane is being heard today by a division bench of Supreme Court Justices Sunil Kumar Pokharel and Bal Krishna Dhakal.

The petition was filed by Lamichhane’s wife, Nikita Poudel, on April 20, claiming that he was being held in illegal detention following a court ruling in connection with the cooperative fraud case.

Earlier, on April 22, Justice Aziz Musalman had issued a show cause order to the government in response to the petition.

Lamichhane had been granted bail of Rs 10 million by the Rupandehi District Court in the embezzlement case involving the Supreme Savings and Loan Cooperative in Butwal.

However, the Tulsipur High Court later overturned the decision and ordered that he be taken into custody for trial, prompting the habeas corpus plea in the Supreme Court.
