KATHMANDU: Police have brought Durga Prasai and his bodyguard, Deepak Khadka, to Kathmandu after they fled following the violent royalist protest in Tinkune on March 28, where they called for the reinstatement of the monarchy.
They were flown from Bhadrapur Airport to Kathmandu on a Buddha Air flight.
According to Nepal Police Central Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Dinesh Kumar Acharya, both Prasai and Khadka were arrested in Bhadrapur and transported to the capital via air.
Prasai was taken into custody by Nepal Police in Jhapa earlier in the day after being arrested in Assam, India. Due to the absence of an extradition treaty between Nepal and India, he was informally brought across the Bhadrapur border.
Indian authorities handed him over to Nepal Police at the Galgalia–Bhadrapur crossing, bypassing the heavily monitored Kakarbhitta checkpoint.
He was initially held at the District Police Office in Bhadrapur and flown to Kathmandu at 11 a.m. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, he was transferred to the District Police Complex and then taken to the Bhadrakali custody facility.
Prasai will be presented before the District Court for a remand extension through the District Public Prosecutor’s Office.
According to police officials, Prasai will be investigated for crimes against the state, similar to charges previously brought against political figures such as Rabindra Mishra and Dhawal Shamsher Rana.
The charges relate to the violent royalist protest on March 28, led by Prasai and Nawaraj Subedi, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and caused an estimated Rs 460 million in damages.
Authorities have indicated that they are preparing to pursue strong legal action, holding Prasai accountable for inciting violence and causing widespread public harm.
