Gagan Thapa calls for self-reflection amid rising monarchist sentiment

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has urged leaders to practice self-criticism rather than blaming the entire government for the resurgence of monarchist movements.

Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Thapa advised Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to refrain from making exaggerated statements about the government’s role in the protests.

In response to Dahal’s earlier remarks that the monarchists have taken to the streets as a result of the Oli government’s misrule, Thapa said, “Let’s not make sweeping statements that everything was fine when you were there but went wrong after you left. We all have made mistakes—let’s own up to them and practice self-criticism.”

Thapa highlighted that blaming the government alone without introspection is counterproductive and could further alienate the public. He cautioned against presenting the situation as entirely negative and urged leaders to reflect on their own roles in the current political scenario.

Earlier, Dahal had stated that the incompetence of the KP Sharma Oli-led government had fueled public discontent and emboldened monarchists, but Thapa stressed the need for collective responsibility rather than one-sided blame.
