KATHMANDU: The government has dismissed Madhesh Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari from her position.
Government spokesperson Jagadish Kharel informed that Monday’s Cabinet meeting decided to remove Bhandari from office.
Bhandari had recently drawn controversy after appointing CPN-UML parliamentary party leader Saroj Yadav as Chief Minister from a hotel in Bardibas and administering the oath there.
Her decision came as a coalition of seven parties, including Nepali Congress and the Maoist Centre, was preparing to stake a claim to form the government with the support of 74 provincial lawmakers.
The move led to widespread vandalism at the Chief Minister’s Office and other ministries in Madhesh Province. The seven-party alliance is preparing to file a writ petition at the Supreme Court against Bhandari’s decision.
The interim government decided to sack her amid growing criticism that her actions undermined the spirit of federalism.
