Ganeshman Singh’s 111th birth anniversary being commemorated

KATHMANDU: The 111th birth anniversary of Ganeshman Singh, the revered leader of the 2046 BS People’s Movement, is being commemorated today through various events across the country.

Widely regarded as a symbol of sacrifice and courage in Nepali politics, Singh earned deep public respect for his integrity and leadership. Following the success of the 2046 People’s Movement, when then King Birendra offered him the post of Prime Minister, Singh declined the position and instead nominated his colleague Krishna Prasad Bhattarai — a gesture remembered as one of the most selfless acts in Nepal’s political history.

Born on 24 Kartik 1972 BS in Kshetrapati, Kathmandu, Singh passed away on 2 Ashoj 2054 BS. Coming from a prominent Kathmandu family, he joined Nepal’s first political party, the Praja Parishad, in 1940 and became actively involved in the struggle to end the Rana regime.

His activism led to imprisonment by the then government, but he escaped from Bhadra Gol Jail in 2007 BS and continued his political activities from exile in India.

While in India, Singh developed a close political partnership with B.P. Koirala and, alongside other leaders, helped strengthen the Nepali National Congress established in 2003 BS. A key figure in the 2007 BS revolution that ushered in democracy, Singh also took part in the armed resistance on the Birgunj front.

Throughout his life, Ganeshman Singh remained steadfast in his commitment to democracy and national service, consistently supporting the ideology of B.P. Koirala and advancing the cause of the Nepali Congress.
