Nepali Congress calls for restraint, dialogue, and unity to resolve crisis

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has urged all sides to exercise restraint, hold dialogue, and maintain unity to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma called for political actors, security agencies, civil society, the media, and the international community to support peace efforts. They welcomed the President’s initiative for talks with the Gen-Z movement and stressed that any decisions must follow constitutional and democratic procedures.

The party expressed condolences to families of youths killed during the protests and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. It also demanded an independent high-level probe into Monday’s use of excessive force and accountability for those responsible.

Congress condemned arson and vandalism at Singha Durbar, Sheetal Niwas, Parliament, the Supreme Court, government offices, media houses, and private properties, blaming “infiltrators with ill intent” rather than genuine protesters. It also denounced the attack on party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and other physical assaults.

The statement acknowledged governance failures, corruption, and the party’s own shortcomings in addressing public expectations. It pledged to rebuild Congress as a responsible political force aligned with the aspirations of young people and committed to strengthening federal democratic republicanism.

“Restraint, unity, and dialogue are the only ways forward,” the party said, urging its members and well-wishers not to be swayed by anger or revenge but to stand firm in protecting constitutional achievements and advancing the country’s progress.
